Congratulations on your blog item on religious order child abuse which you experienced yourself and have written so well about.

The abuse of children by the Roman Catholic Church personnel was a sheer abuse of power…period ….there was no transparency and no accountability by either the institutional church or their component religious congregations…………
In Ireland in 2009 the Catholic Church still owns and/or administers 98% of the primary or elementary schools. The local Catholic bishop heads up the board of management as Patron and can block a teacher being appointed. Also in 2009 the Catholic Church maintains and ensures that the elementary schools promote the Church “Ethos”. Why should the “ethos” of the Catholic Church be promoted to young children in Irish Schools? A disgraceful compromised settlement deal was done some years ago by a Fianna Fail Irish Government Minister and the sundry religious congregations in Ireland. It is regretable that the 1937 Irish Constitution still gives a special place to the Catholic Church in Ireland..There needs to be a separation of Church and State and that is long overdue. But given the present toxic regressive economic situation in Ireland the separation of Church and State is not on the agenda……..and will not be on the agenda I would think. Any comments on the above remarks would be welcome.

I remember you from St. Vincent’s. I lived on East 38th Street between Foster and Ave D. I agree with your assessments of Sister Cor Marie and Ann Roberts. In the second grade during rehearsal for the Christmans recital, I suffered at the hands of Sister Mary Allen who savagely beat me to the point that I had hand marks on my face for several days.
